Steveco and Port of Hamina signed a letter of intent
Steveco Oy and Port of Hamina Ltd have signed a letter of intent which gives Steveco Oy and Hamina Multimodal Terminals Oy (HMT) an opportunity to negotiate on combining their stevedoring operations.
The negotiations will be conducted in the summer of 2010 so that they will be brought to conclusion by the end of August.
If Steveco’s and HMT’s stevedoring businesses in Hamina and Kotka are combined, the result will be by far the strongest terminal unit in Finland, capable of serving not only Finnish exports and transit traffic but also bulk and project cargo customers in an efficient and tailored manner.
Comprehensive machinery together with personnel possessing versatile skills will guarantee the flexible use of resources and enable response to changing volumes both in terms of cargo handling and warehousing. This will safeguard cost-efficient growth. Instead of overlapping operations, the operator can also focus on terminal-specific specialisation. Uniform and intensified processes benefit all clients.
The goal with the integration of Steveco’s and HMT’s stevedoring businesses is to secure the jobs and the competitiveness of the ports of Hamina and Kotka. Another objective is to attract new cargo flows to the two ports, which would add to the employment options.
As the process advances, we will review the matters with each client.
